There are some posts on CocoonTech indicating that Icon dimmer switches can be cajoled into having adjustable ramp rates. Can anyone on this forum confirm that?

I am about to order switches for my house under construction, and I am actually leaning toward Icons for the majority of them. The "nightlight" feature of the LED seems nice and I think I would prefer the cleaner look of not having the LED array indicating dim level (isn't it pretty obvious how dim the lights are?). If in fact you could control ramp rates that may push me over the edge.

From what I recall, if you set the ramp rate in X10 mode, it will be remembered in Insteon mode.

Mike,

I can second Tony on having heard that as well. I have Icon switches, but currently have only set them up as companion switches in multi-way circuits (no load) so cant actually test for you.

Ive got a small batch on order to build a test panel and will try to test this out to confirm. It will probably be a week before I get a chance though.

Dave.

Dave--

I will probably have to place my order within a week.

I do have an icon lamp module for which the web site states there is no adjustable ramp rate and yet I can set one from PH and it works appropriately. I am hoping the icon switches are the same way!

I just purchased another bunch of insteon switches. Remembering the same post as Plano-mike I tried adjusting the ramp rate on the new icon dimmers just as I did on the Switchlincs - it works! My new icon dimmers have the amber light.   I then tried the same thing on all my older icon switchlincs (2 weeks older). The older icon dimmers have the green light. It didn't work. So my conclusion is, the new icon dimmers have the amber light and the normal insteon ramp link works; my older icon dimmers have the green light and the insteon ramp rate does not work on them. I have not yet tried the X-10 ramp rate trick on the older icon dimmers.

On the downside, one of my new Switchlinc dimmers installed for only 3 days lost its insteon communication ability - altho all the other functions work and it works in X-10 mode. It had worked well in insteon mode for 3 days. This is my 6th or 7th insteon device that I am returning (I have 26 installed). Of the 6, 3 were icon dimmers, one was a switchlinc, one was a lamplinc, one was a plc and I don't recall the other. 2 of those were DOA and the others failed in operation for only a short period. The working ones work great and have been 100% reliable in my home. It's unfortunate that some don't work at all. Unless smarthome gets its act together on quality control I'm afraid insteon won't survive.

Nadler,

Thanks for posting this info. Thats good news to hear on the new Icons. Im betting that the X10 ramprate trick will work on the old ones but look forward to you actually testing.

I know what you mean about the quality. So far, Ive been real lucky (Im knocking on some wood) but have heard of others troubles. Ive got a new batch waiting to be installed so we'll see if I continue my luck. So far though, the one redeeming quality does seem to be SmartHome's willingness and ease in replacing the defectives (if you discount the PITA in removing the defective hardware).

Hope things go better for you and look forward to your X10 test.

Dave.
