All, Im toying with a small interface change to the Insteon Explorer "Links" screen and would like your feedback. Currently the "Devices" screen is in the middle between the "Controllers" and the "Responders" window. You scroll this window and highlight a row to see the links of the selected device. To the far right is a list of devices that can be added to either the "Controllers" or "Responders".
The proposed change would take the "Devices" screen out of the middle and make it appear nearly identical to the device list on the right of the screen. This "Devices" window would then appear on the far left of the screen (mirror image of the device list on the right). The Controllers and Responders window would then stretch to cover the space vacated by the "Devices" window.
It has been suggested that this change would make the "Links" screen a little more intuitive and would help to minimize scrolling of the "Devices" to view links of. It would however mean that you may pick up some horizontal scrolling in the Controllers and Responders window as you'll lose some width to make room for the "Devices" window on the left.
Let me know,
Dave.

Dave,
I do believe the proposed Insteon Explorer change would be more intuitive. I'll take the horizontal scrolling to have the interface easier to use.
I vote for the new method, but I am unable to vote due to a "You can not vote in this poll" message.

I can't vote in the poll either (even though I'm logged in) but I would vote for the change because it is more intuitive (altho I am used to the way it is at present at this point).

For all those that tried to vote and couldnt, please try again. Even though it looks like everyone is for the change, I'd like to see if the polls are working because this is a feature I might like to use in the future.
The Poll security was set for registered users but it appears that the only two votes are probably myself and Tony. Anyways, Ive changed the security to ALL USERS so I don't know if that will fix it or not. Supposedly all users will allow even guests to vote.
Heh, I was going to make a mock up myself but didnt have time. It's kind of in my head at the moment. The only problem I have right now is where to put all of the action text that is currently sitting directly above the Devices Window now. Just curious if that was in your mock up or if anyone has any thoughts about this.
Dave.

I cannot vote either but the new way sounds good. Another change I would like to see would be a tab for managing X-10 information in a format similiar to the Links tab. It would be nice to have the list of X-10 addresses in a column on the right and be able to assign or remove those to individual buttons on a kaypad. It would also be nice to have a verify and rebuild type functionality for the X-10 information as well.
In the current KPL Config tab the main X-10 address is never displayed after I do a retrieve data operation on the keypad. I also don't know how to manage the X-10 inormation for the secondary buttons from that screen.

The proposed change does sound like it would be easier to use. My vote is 'New Way'.
I know this has been mentioned before, but is it also in the works to 'remember' window settings in Insteon explorer? I usually resize the various sections, but these changes are lost when insteon explorer is closed.
...also unable to vote/am logged in...

I can't vote either but if you make it look like the mockup, then I'm all for it.

I would still vote for the new way, as shown in Tony's mockup.

Just my opinion of course, but from my perspective, this might help:
1) Put the devices on the left, as proposed, with a nice clear heading, bold font.
2) Get rid of the device list on the right totally
3) Put the controllers and responders as suggested, on top of each other to the right of the devices with a nice BIG BOLD heading.
4) I think this is key -- Between the device list on the left, and the controller/responder on the right, add a new small pane in gray. In this pane, have two sets of add/remove arrows. One would be vertically centered beside the controllers pane, with a nice heading and the other would be vertically centred beside the responders pane. I'm not sure if my description is doing it justice.
