Hi - I bought some Insteon 2843-222 open/close sensors. I linked them to PH in Insteon Explorer. I made the PLM a responder of the sensors and did SAVE.
It appeared to work, I was getting on/off from the sensors, which was working as a trigger, but there was no handshaking, so i was missing events.
I contacted Smarthome. Eventually they escalated my call to developers who reviewed the SH logs. They said there were messages "missing" which indicated improper linking (i.e., PH was aware of the messages from the sensors but wasn't linked with it), and suggested a manual link.
So - 2 questions
1) If I link the sensor with the PLM Manually, is that a good idea? It occurs to me that I periodically reset the PLM I would have to re-link manually again. It's a good experiment, but not a solution.
2) Is there a trick to getting PH to link properly with this device? What would you recommend. [Maybe I ALSO have to make the sensor a controller of the PLM?}
Thanks Very Much!
/j
I should add that the sensor is very limited - you can't poll it, it doesn't even send a low-batt message, so it may not be possible to "push" links to it? (In which case, Manual link is the only choice?)

Here's what Smarthome said
The logs only show the open and close broadcasts events, and then group success report. All of the success reports I see in the user’s logs show that there are 0 group members. Additionally, there aren’t any direct messages to the PLM to indicate that the the open close sensor was directly linked to the PLM.
As mentioned we do not work directly with powerhome, and as such we are unsure how powerhome handles any links. On an Insteon level however, we would advise manually linking the sensors to the PLM. For the manual linking, start by holding the set button on the open close sensor until it is flashing, then hold the set button on the PLM to pair the units directly.

Looks like Manual Linking fixed it (or at least, I'm now getting messages similar to other devices). I think the the PH method of "push" linking doesn't work on this sensor, so I was somehow "semi-linked" where PH thought I was linked but the Sensor didn't. Not sure this is a PH issue as I think the Sensor just can't be linked remotely (or maybe there's some magic code).
Anyway - live and learn

Jeff,
This is due to the battery operated nature of the device. The device is normally asleep so attempts at linking via software will usually fail. The
best way to handle this is to first do a manual link with the device with the open/close sensor as the controller and the PLM as the responder. Press
and hold the button on the open/close sensor until it enters link mode and then press the button on the PLM or press the "Link" button in the Insteon
Explorer on the "Manual Linking" tab under the "PLC/PLM as Responder Linking" section. This will take care of any initial I2CS setup issues.
Once that initial manual link is done, I would again place the open/close sensor in link mode and then do all your software based linking from
PowerHome. While the open/close sensor is in link mode, it is not sleeping and will be awake for something like 4 minutes giving you time to do any
links and such programmatically from within PowerHome.
Dave.

Hi Dave - after linking in SW, I linked manually and that appeared to make everything work fine. Thanks for the explanation though- I will use your suggestion next time.
Thanks!
