There are a a number of KPL threads, but I haven't
seen this particular issue mentioned.
I have two KPLs:
-"Master" as 6-button with global On and Off buttons,
as well as 4 scenes that control various zones.
-"Secondary" as 8-button, each controlling the
SwitchLincs (which are hidden in a closet) in a zone
directly.
I'm having trouble geittng the KPL LEDs to respond to
group messages. When I hit the "Master On", the LED's
on the Secondary KPL buttons wouldn't light, despite
being linked as responders.
I finally fixed it by rebuilding all the links in the
secondary KPL, and it worked.
I then set the proper buttons as responders for a
second scene, and again no go. This time forcing a
rebuild didn't fix it either. Scene 2 (grp #3) on the
master is linked to all 8 buttons on the secondary
KPL, but will only trigger the first.
Incidentally, I also ended up with a couple of KPL
links in PH that referred to KPL button "254". I
didn't set that (and indeed PH won't let you)... it
appeared to show up at some point while creating other
links. I deleted them.. and the KPL LED issues started
a bit thereafter, but I'm not sure that's a direct
cause.
Thoughts?

Hmm.. reading another thread, it appears I may be doing
this incorrectly. In that thread is says that a KPL has
8 responder groups...
I'm setting up the secondary KPL with 8 responder links,
one for each button #1-8 and all responding to the
master KPL group 3 msg.
Is that correct?

scaesare,
Sounds to me like you're doing it correct. A KPL has 8
controller groups and 8 responder groups. When the KPL
is configured in 6 button mode, the main on and off
buttons are controller and responder group 1. The
middle four buttons will be controller/responder
groups 3,4,5, and 6. Groups 2,7, and 8 are unused.
When the KPL is in 8 button mode, you'll have
controller/responder groups of 1 thru 8. With the
master KPL being in 6 button mode, group 3 would be
the first small button (on the left) directly under
the main On button. To have this button control the 8
individual buttons on the secondary KPL, you would
need to create 8 links with the master KPL as the
controller as group 3. The responder will be the
secondary KPL with each links Button number being 1
thru 8. When these links are in place, the group 3
button on the master should turn on/off all of the
secondary KPL buttons. Keep in mind that this will
have no effect on any actual "lights" (the
switchlincs) being controlled. To control those as
well as the KPL buttons, you'll need 8 more links (1
for each switchlinc that is controlled). The key
takeaway here is that controlling a KPL (or any other
device for that matter) does not in any way "trigger"
that devices links.
Let me know if this helps or not.
Dave.

Thanks Dave... that's exactly what I'm doing.
I have 8 links with the 8-button KPL as responder to Group1 msgs from the 6-btn KPL as a "master". They all work as expected: all 8 LED's come on when the master "ON" is pushed.
The problem is, they won't respond when linked to group3 msgs. I also have 8 responder links with a combination of turning various LED's on & off (representing which zones in that scene are active), and it simply doesn't respond.
It appears that the 8-btn KPL is ignoring anything other than group1 msgs...

Hmmm...definitely odd. It shouldn't be a
communications issue as group 1 messages are getting
through. At this point, I would do a factory reset of
both KPL's and then on the "Links" tab of the Insteon
Explorer, make the first KPL the currently selected
device and press "Rebuild" and then repeat for the
second KPL. Let PH rebuild all of the links from
scratch in each KPL and then give it another shot.
Let me know,
Dave.

Thanks Dave... I've done this since the original post, and it didn't help.
I did find out that the reset process hangs the KPL, and I have to long-cycle power to resurrect it. Subsequently it's problematic to get the KPL to go in to 6-btn mode (it won't respond to software attempts to configure it as such... and manual attempts tend to hang it also).
I suspect replacing it is the best bet.
Thanks again.

Gotcha. If the KPL is having that much problem just in
manual use and a factory reset hasnt corrected the issue
then it may indeed be a unit in the process of failing
(gosh knows Ive had a few).
Keep us posted if you replace it and the problem
persists or is fixed.
Dave.
