I just got my first RF only device, the RemoteLinc2
little keypad. I am trying to figure out how this works,
and have just read some posts on "linking". Is it really
that difficult to make this remote talk to PH and control
things??
Right now, I have 4 Insteon ApplianceLinc modules that
are for Christmas lights, all I want to do is use button
A to turn them ON or Off. For the life of me I can not
figure out how to do this. So far the remote does
nothing.
Yes, I do have Access Points (2). Can someone please
explain this. It seems to be way more complicated then
need be from reading other posts.

As a battery device it sleeps to save battery life so it must be put into linking mode by pressing Set button until LED blinks Green. At that point there are 4 minutes to create the necessary links.
The RemoteLinc2 buttons have an unusual Group assignment.
a=Group2
b=Group1
c=Group4
d=Group3
and so on. Other than that it works like a RemoteLinc. When a button is pressed it sends an On command and the LED blinks Green. Press the same button again and it sends an Off command and the LED blinks Red. The color of the LED blink indicates On or Off command.

My apologies, I forgot an important piece of information. The RemoteLinc2 only supports I2 Extended command linking (like the Motion Sensor and TriggerLinc). The Device Type entry must indicate I2 support as the RemoteLinc2 did not implement the Insteon commands for the old I1 linking technique.
PH2 must be a 2.1.4 or above.

OK, there would be the first problem I guess. I only have
2.1b I best get the latest version of PH. Then I'll try
again, thanks for the help. I'm sure I'll be back! LOL

Install 2.1.2 first, then unzip 2.1.4 fixes into PH directory. 2.1.3 is not needed as 2.1.4 contains all fixes that are in 2.1.3.
Dave posted the process of setting up a device to use Extended ALDB linking. There is a post by Dave near the beginning of the 2.1.2 topic. There is another device column that must be checked which is described in that post.
EDIT: go to the first page of the 2.1.2 topic. There is a link to the download from there. The link to the 2.1.4 zip fix file is a few pages into the 2.1.2 topic

OK fully updated now. Database updated and all seems good.
Now, I am still at a complete loss to this linking, or even
groups. Never done either.
But before we go any further, should this RemoteLinc2
device appear anywhere in the Insteon explorer?? I have yet
to have it's address number show up anywhere.

If it was added as a new device, yes it should be in the list with the other devices.
EDIT: it may be necessary to Reinit. Don't remember if a new device requires a Reinit

Alright, this is rediculous. I finally got the A button to
control one ApplianceLinc. I just more or less guessed at
how to add the RemoteLinc2 as a device because it doesn't
appear in the Auto Discovery mode in PH.
Now, trying to create a group, or link or whatever to hit
that one button and have it toggle 3 other (4 in total)
ApplianceLinc modules???

How did you get the RemoteLinc2 to control one of the ApplianceLincs. Do the same thing for the other ApplianceLincs.
After setting the RemoteLinc2 device entry with the options Dave defined in one of the early posts for using Extended ALDB linking, Select the RemoteLinc2 as the Current Device. Add the ApplianceLincs to the Responders (of current device) section. For button A use Group 2.

I followed the quick start instruction, by pressing the
button on the remote, then press and hold the set button
for 3 seconds, then press and hold the set button on the
appliancelinc untill it beeps and the remore beeps twice.
I was under the (mis) understanding you could setup
links and or groups within PH to respond to certain
controller buttons pushed. This is what I have been
trying to find. I'll do as above to each module and see
if it all works.

You can create the links through Ph2. From my earlier post

Crap, sorry I missed that part. I did get them all
responding finally through linking them individually.
I'll try messing with it via PH so I learn how to do it.
Thanks a TON for the help, I really appreciate it.

I have a RemoteLinc2 as well and can confirm that PowerHome is able to successfully create links. Of course, as Lee pointed out, only extended commands are supported so you must configure your RL2 to use extended commands. Of course, since its an RF only device, you must first place it in link mode in order for PH to communicate with it.
I can also confirm the odd button/group numbering. Still trying to figure that one out.
For my puposes, I couldnt think of any real use why I would directly link the RL2 to actual Insteon devices so I used PH to just create links between the PLM and the RL2. I also added a link to an Insteon virtual device for each button. Basically this allows me to write some easy Insteon device change triggers for when any of the RL2 buttons are pressed.
An insteon virtual device is simply a fictional insteon device and appears like a real insteon device but the address begins with a "V". What I like to do is if my RL2's address is 12.34.56 then I make a virtual device address like V2.34.56. In the links screen, I set the RL2 as the current device and then just drag over the PLM and the virtual device I want to write triggers for as responders of each RL2 button.
Hope this helps,
Dave.

Is there a script available to load the TYPES tables for the RemoteLinc2 2444A2 device? There is reference in this string to some information from Dave but I can not find it.
Thanks,
Terry

Terry,
Below is a SQL to insert a record for the RemoteLinc2:
INSERT INTO insteontypes VALUES (
(select max(typeid) + 1 from insteontypes),
'2444A2XX8 - RemoteLinc2 8 Scene',
'1K',
'On',
'Off',
'Dimmed',
'Unknown',
0,
65535,
0,
8421504,
0,
15793151,
0,
12639424,
'',
'',
'',
'',
8,
0,
18,
NULL,
4096,
2,
8);
Basically just copy/paste this into the PH Multi-Editor in SQL mode (shift-F5) and execute it. The script above though is for beta 2.1.4 and I cant remember if the insteontypes table changed from 2.1b so it may not work for you if you're not on 2.1.4.
Its simple enough to just manually add it though. Open Insteon Explorer, navigate to the Types tab, and click the Append button. Set the description to something appropriate (you can use what I used in the SQL above), set Ctlr and Resp groups 8 and 8, put a check in Keypadlinc, pretty much leave everything else at default except at the very end, set Devcat = 0, Subcat = 18, prodkey is blank, Mem Top = 4096, DB Type = Linear. Press the Save/Refresh button, close and reopen Insteon Explorer and the new type will appear in the Device Type dropdown on the Devices tab.
Hope this helps,
Dave.

Can someone please add a little detail to this topic? I have a RL2. I have gotten so far as to add
the new Insteon type, and I have manually added a new Insteon device by entering in the address of
the RL2 printed on the back of the remote (1C 35 DA). When I press a button on the RL2, I can see in
the Insteon Raw log the RECEIVEINSTEONRAW=1C 35 DA 01 CB 11 00, with the 01 and the 11 changing for
each button I press. So it looks like it is working. Sooo, how do I create the link for any given
RL2 button to a PLM group? Any time I try to create a link in the Links tab, I get an insteon
timeout=1C 35 DA error. And can you tell me a little more about using the virtual devices?

Some things to verify. The Device entry for the RL2 must have the IEngine column indicating I2. The RL2 goes to sleep so any time a link is being created the RL2 must be put into linking mode first. PLM Groups would not be used. Link each RL2 Group number, 1-8 (assuming 8 Scene RL2) as Controller to the PLM as a Responder.

In terms of links the RL2 is linked to the PLM with the same definitions that would be used with an 8 button KeypadLinc. Of course there could be additional links with the PLM as Controller and the KeypadLinc buttons as Responders which do not apply to a Controller only device such as the RL2.

Lee, thanks for the help.
I am at work now, so I can't check all of this until tonight when I get home. I did VNC in to my PH server
and sure enough, I did not have the IEngine setting correct.
So, when it comes to making the links, can I just make the link in the Links tab by adding the PLM as a
responder? How will I tell it what PLM group to link to?
I get it that the PL2 is only a controller and cannot act as a responder for any other device. But I am
interested in the virtual devices so I can use PH triggers and whatnot on when the buttons are pressed.
