          I have apparently killed another serial PLM. It suddenly

 |  will stop communicating with the switches. I get red
 timeouts for every switch about 12hrs after I unplug it
 and plug it back into the outlet. So I decided I would
 try the USB stick style PLM 2448A7. But I can't get it
 to work.
 
 I installed VCP software, and plug it in, and computer
 recognized fine on com3. I ran PH, and I got the
 firmware error. So searching the forms I found to modify
 the INI and set pre63=1. Powerhome then initialized ok.
 
 I went into insteon explorer and set all devices
 controller to the new USB stick, but I can't get it to
 control anything. I have an access point and 2 other
 devices within about 20ft or less, and no control.
 
 What am I doing wrong? Maybe someone can walk me through
 the setup a bit more. Must be something I am doing
 wrong. I am still such a noob, I am sure its something I
 did or didn't do right. Should I remove the old PLM
 completely, or can you run two PLM's on PH?

 Sounds like you've done everything right. One possibility though is that all of your devices are the newer I2CS devices in which case they will ONLY respond to the PLM if there is a link between them. If you are replacing your old PLM with the new PLM, you can use the "Replace Address" column in the Devices tab of Insteon Explorer (put the new PLM address in this column on the old PLM device line). If you're wanting to essentially "duplicate" the links so that either controller could be switched back and forth, then on the "Links" tab, you could make the old PLM the current device, highlight all the controller and responder links and press "Copy". Then make the new PLM the currect device and select "Paste".
 
 Since the stick is RF only (with a fairly limited range), before I do any of the above (you would still want to do the above though as the new PLM will need the appropriate links), I would try moving your Access Point or a dual band device closer (say within 5 feet) and see if you can then control.
 
 Another thing to keep in mind, is that the older, original Access Points ONLY communicated with each other to bridge the phases and use a different frequency that the dual band or RF only Insteon devices use and so cant be used for that purpose. The newer Access Points will do both (bridge phases and communicate with RF Insteon devices).

 |  have one I2CS and one legacy device that are probably
 closer than the 20ft I posted, but they are still
 probably more than 5ft away. As far as the access points
 they were purchased about a year an half ago, but Im not
 sure where I got them so they could be older devices.
 
 Thanks for all your help, I will do some more
 investigation once I get home over the holiday.
