Hi Everyone,
I have a 2420 motion sensor and I cannot get any triggers
to work with it. I think I may have messed up a couple
of things since I am not getting group commands anymore,
only group cleanup ones.
Basically i started with a light switch, and when turned
on would trigger a script to shut the light off after a
minute. This was working fine. I noticed in the event
log it would show up with 2 events, first the group
command and second the group cleanup.
So I then added a motion sensor and a switchlinc so I
could turn on my outside lights when the motion sensor
was triggered. When I added the motion sensor at the
beginning everything seemed ok except I could not get the
group command, only the group cleanup.
So I have been playing around with deleting links and re-
creating but cannot get the unit to post a group command.
Now I also am only getting the group cleanup from the
original light switch that was working fine before.
I don't have the raw log file from insteon explorer since
it won't save to file, keeps saying could not open ""
file, and I can't find any place to set the file for
logging. So I took a screen capture of the light switch
and motion sensor raw log.
The 12.11.AC is the motion sensor, 12.37.35 is the light
switch.
Since the light switch was working before I must have
done something to it for it not to function properly. As
well, the motion detector from the start would only issue
group cleanup commands, and i can not seem to get this to
trigger anything as well.
Help here would be appreciated.
Brad.

Unless the hardware in the motion sensor or SwitchLinc is defective (which I do not think) the problem is the lack of a responder link record in the PLM for the particular controller device and Group number combination. The Group Cleanup Direct messages are seen because they are specifically addressed To the PLM. Group Broadcast messages have no specific To address and therefore are not passed from PLM to PH2 unless there is a link record in the PLM that contains the specific controller device address and Group number to match to. If the responder link record exists in the PLM then the From address in the Group Broadcast will match the Controller address and the message will be passed to PH2 (assuming the Group number also matches).
The Insteon Group In triggers when a Group Broadcast message is received. No Group Broadcast sent from PLM to PH2, no trigger.
When a Controller (motion sensor, SwitchLinc, etc) is activated, paddle pressed, etc. it sends a Group Broadcast message first. This allows all responder devices that have been linked correctly to respond nearly instantaneously. Then the Controller sends a Group Cleanup Direct message to each responder device individually just in case the Group Broadcast was not received. The sequence of Group Broadcast, Group Cleanup Direct is the normal sequence issued by all Controller devices unless they are malfunctioning which I do not think is your case.

How are you deleting and relinking the devices. If some of that activity is being done outside of PH, such as using the Set button, the links are physically created but unknown to PH. If you then do something in PH to create a link that can create a conflict between what was done outside of PH and what PH is trying to define. There are processes to get PH and the devices in sync but they are generally explicit or accomplished during a device status scan but the later may take some time to accomplish.
Might be good to detail what you are doing to delete and relink the devices.

I went in and did a factory reset on the devices and recreated the links, but only created the motion sensor as a controller to the PLM. Now I got the group broadcast messages. Since there are no controls associated with a motion sensor I did not add the PLM as a controller to the sensor.
Another thing was I probably need to slow down. It seems PH takes quite a bit of time to change the links or delete items. I just finished replacing the light switch with the switch linc and it is working good. Now I just have to install the motion sensor.
Thanks grif091

Link records in the PLM/PLC (when being used as the powerline controller) can be read/written very quickly because that is accomplished through the serial interface.
For Insteon devices being communicated with over the powerline, it takes more than 16 individual Insteon Peek/Poke commands to write an 8 byte link record. As newer devices pick up support for the Extended Insteon message, which allows the reading/writing of an 8 byte link record with a single command, the process will become faster. But for now, link record reading and writing is a relatively slow process.
