Hi - I'm contemplating upgrading my PC and will lose my serial port. Originally, I had bought a USB PLM, but had problems*, so swapped for serial PLM. I could get a serial card for the new PC, but that's sort of going backwards, I'd rather put a Serial/USB converter on the PLM ("upgrading" it). Was wondering if anyone had experience with this. thanks!

*it turned out that what I should have done was simply switch to a USB card. The internal USB hub on the PC was not-so-great, but by the time i found out, I already had the serial PLM, and SH told me that they built the USB PLM by taking an Serial PLM and adding a USB/Serial converter in the case, so I figured I could always do so later. Just curious if anyone's seen issues. Thanks!

I use a PL-2302 no problems....

thanks - apparently that one is no longer available and the PL2303 that replaces it has mixed reviews....
I'm looking at the Trendnet TU-S9 - anyone use that one?
Although Smarthome sells one from GWC - one would think that would work?

just to close this - I tried a couple of these little USB/serial converters and they were flakey. I ended up getting a PCI card with Serial & parallel (I had an old printer as well). < $10 at newegg and rock solid.

Probably the best thing. Im still rocking a 4 serial port PCI card in my main PH machine as well as multiple USB to serial adaptors (as well as using virtual serial ports to talk to the two serial ports on my Global Cache...I cant seem to get enought serial ports  ).
I havent had any problems with the USB to serial adapters I have but I know others have had issues. It depends on both the actual USB to serial adapter itself (some work better than others) and the USB controller on the PC (some seem to have problems).
Going with a PCI board seems to always solve the problem though.

FWIW, I have never had a problem with the various Radio Shack USB/serial adapters over the years.
