I have had a stable PH setup for several years. Recently, while away on travel (isn't that always the case!), my timers stopped firing. I tried the usual fixes of resetting the software, then resetting the PLM, but neither worked. I eventually did a hard reset, but that also didn't work. Thinking my Powerhome installation had gotten corrupted, I fired up mControl (another software package that I used to use), but that didn't work either.

On startup, PH gives the error message "Get IM Info command filed for Insteon PLM INSTEON CONTROLLER. Attempted to restart controller...". There is no contact with the PLM, and nothing in the log other than errors.

I assumed that my PLM had died, but as part of my troubleshooting, I installed Docklight Scripting, and to my complete surprise, I get solid two-way comms with the PLM. Hmmmmmm.....

Does anyone have any idea why two HA software packages would fail, but essentially raw serial comms would work???

Sounds like the PLM is not returning the expected message format even though you get messages from it with docklight. Can you post the actual PLM response from the Get IM Info request.

From Docklight Scripting:

7/28/2010 17:52:23.640 [TX] - 02 60
7/28/2010 17:52:23.646 [RX] - 83 60 0E D9 FE 03 05 72 06

7/28/2010 17:54:26.694 [TX] - 02 48
7/28/2010 17:54:26.710 [RX] - 83 48 15

I also tried Light Show Master, and it, too, wasn't able to establish comms with the PLM. I wonder if the Insteon apps (PH, mControl, and Light Show Master) all use some common Windows serial port access that Docklight doesn't use.

I would contact SmartHome. Looks like the PLM has gone south.

Thanks. I'm still not convinced it's the PLM (since it responds to Docklight), but it should still be inside of the 2yr warranty, so I've contacted Smarthome.

Thanks, again.

The messages coming back from the PLM are invalid. That is why all the applications that actually try to process the PLM messages reject the response. The message returned from the PLM should start with a STX 0x02.
