Todd,
This error is caused while trying to init the Voice Recognition module. It would appear that TTS is ok. Did you download and install the additional VR and TTS components and in the proper order?
Open your Control Panel and go to the Add / Remove Programs. Do you have entries for the Microsoft Speech Recognition Engine 4.0 and the Microsoft Text to Speech Engine 4.0?
If the Microsoft speech components have not been properly installed, you'll have to ignore the error message and go into the PowerHome Explorer and disable the VR and TTS. Restart PowerHome and the error message will be gone.
Assuming all has been installed correctly and it still doesn't work, what OS are you using?
Dave.

Todd,
Is it possible that you have Microsoft Agent or any other TTS or VR programs installed? I have found a thread which discusses a bug within the Microsoft SAPI ActiveX controls which might shed some light: http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22direct+speech%22+microsoft+find+return&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=u8NHHgVlAHA.1388%40tkmsftngp04&rnum=1
Long story short...if you do have any other TTS or VR programs installed such as Lernout and Hauspie (L & H), you might have to uninstall them as well as the Microsoft SAPI and reinstall them making sure to install the Microsoft SAPI first.
If this is not the case, can you get TTS up and running by itself?? Can we isolate the problem to just the VR or does both the TTS and VR have a problem.
Dave.

Todd,
I'd like you to try downloading http://www.myx10.com/download/sapi5setup.exe. This is the setup for SAPI5 TTS. Install this and then try changing your TTS Setup to SAPI5. Leave VR disabled for now. Exit PowerHome and restart.
Lets see if we can at least get the TTS working and then we'll tackle the VR.
Let me know.

Todd,
Open your Control Panel and launch the "Speech" icon. Go to the "Text to Speech" tab. Select a voice and then try to preview the voice.
Let me know the results.

Todd,
Also try...
Launch PowerHome. Click 'OK' and bypass the Critical error message. Go to menu Voice->TTS Setup. Select a voice from the dropdown list. Make sure that pitch and speed are both 0. Check the "Save settings to Table" box and then exit. Restart PowerHome and let me know.
Dave.

after I opended up soeech in the control pannel and previewed the voice I still had the error. Then I went into the TTS setup and there was a voice selected but I re selected one and closed and opened PH and it worked!!
Thanks now on to VR..... Let me give you the error... I turned VR back on and rstarted PH and get

Todd,
Thats great!! One down. However, the VR may be a little more difficult. Ive made some changes to the VR module based upon your problems but they won't be available to test until I release the next beta version (Im shooting for this weekend). I would like to have you test the fix for me when it is available.
In the meantime, lets verify that your Voice settings are correct. Launch the PowerHome Explorer and go to Setup->VR. Set your settings to the following:
Enable Voice Recognition: checked Voice Recognition Autostart: unchecked Voice Recognition Auto User: POWERHOME Voice Recognition Auto Grammar: SLEEP Automatic Gain: 0 Complete Timeout(ms): 300 Incomplete Timeout(ms): 600 Energy Floor: 32767 Real Time: 100 Echo: checked
After making the above adjustments, exit the Explorer and then exit PowerHome. Restart.
My guess is that unless something was seriously wrong in the above settings, you'll still have the problem which we'll have to try and tackle with the release this weekend.
Dave.

Apparently no one has had any problems with TSS since 2003 Nobody but me that is
When I try to init TSS in setup it results in Error 35 which is not to supprizing since TSS dosent't show up in the control panel even though I have repediatly removed it and re-installed SAPI 5.1. It does show up in the list in ADD/Remove programs.
I have downloaded and installed SAPI 5.1.msi as well as
http://www.myx10.com/download/sapi5setup.exe. and they both install something with no errors or any indication that anything is wrong. But alas no TSS in control panel.
this is an old (I guess steam powered on the computer time scale) P5-200 running Win 95 with an ISA sound card. I can play MIDI wav CD stuff with no problem although some .wav files wont play from ph_playsound - they do play with win media player.
I tried getting TSS to work a year or so ago and gave up in frustration but now it is time to try again. I have run several other HA programs in the past some of which hav had voice capabilities. I believe that Home Seeer used Microsoft agent and even though it is no longer installed and I can find no reference to Agent, I think this might be part of the problem from what I have read, but I don't know what to do about it.
Regards,
Dean

Dean,
Have you tried the TTS in the SAPI 4.0a package? Just wondering if it works and SAPI 5 is the problem.
If you havent tried it, I would give it a shot. If we can get SAPI 4.0a working, we can move from there to SAPI 5.
Let me know,
Dave.
