I got my Insteon gear and trying to create a basic link. Whatever I do, I can't seem to get it to work.

I have my devices set up just fine and verified I can control them. Just for simplicity, I'm trying to get a button on a keypadlinc (button A) to toggle an Appliance link. Not having much luck here.

Clearly I'm missing something pretty simple ... anyone have a step by step tutorial for doing this?

thx,
Brian

BTW -- the problem specifically I'm having is this:

On the Links tab from the Insteon explorer: I have my devices listed in the devices (middle) listbox. I want to have button A on my KPL toggle the ApplianceLinc.

Whenever I select the ApplianceLinc in the devices list, I thought the right thing to do would be to add the KPL as a controller. When I do this, the button column in the Controllers list is blue (so if refers to the device selected?) I don't get why that's so ... what am I missing?

Thanks!

Brian,

Welcome to PowerHome!

To create the link you describe, you can go about it a couple of different ways. You can select the ApplianceLinc as the Device and add the KPL as a controller or you select the KPL as the device and add the ApplianceLinc as a responder. Since you've described the first method, I'll go into a little more detail.

On the Links tab of the Insteon Explorer, select the ApplianceLinc in the middle window labeled "Devices". When you do this, the current controllers should appear in the upper window and the current responders should appear in the lower window. To add the KPL as a controller, locate the KPL in the right-hand window, highlight it, and click the upper left arrow button. This should copy the KPL into the Controllers window. At this point, the ID, Description, Group, Button, and Link status columns will have a red background indicating that attention is required. The next step is where I think confusion lies. You should type a "3" in the "Group" column. The "Button" column should be left as a 0. In PowerHome, I use the word "Group" to refer to a controller and the word "Button" to refer to a responder. If you look at the color coding of the column headings in the 3 windows of the Links tab, it will make a little more sense. The columns with a reddish-brown background are specific to the "Controller" device. Any column with a blue column is specific to the selected Device (middle window). Columns with a Green header are specific to responders. So in your situation, the column labeled "Group" in the controller window refers to the KPL button that will be doing the control (button A is group 3). The "Button" column is blue colored so refers to the appliancelinc. Since the Appliancelinc has no buttons per say, this column should be left as 0. If the selected device was another KPL rather than an ApplianceLinc, then you would set the "Button" column to match the number of the button being controlled.

Anyways, after you type a 3 in the "Group" column and tab off of the field, the red backgrounds should go away except on the Link Status columns. Once this is done, just press the "Save" text and you should see the Create Link commands appear in the Pending Operations window.

Hope this helps,

Dave.

Thanks Dave!

Great info -- I started to get it to work a little as I got this response, so it is making sense now. I was thinking of "group" as in the more global insteon group, and I now I see why it kept insisting on a button 0. :)

Now for learning timers and triggers...
