New user here, and I have a question that I've been unable to find discussed on the forums. I've got an Elk M1 Gold with a 2414S serial PLC, and I have a separate 2414U USB PLC connected to my PC running PH. I have 67 Insteon devices linked using PH, and they seem to be working well. Before I found and installed PH last week, I had linked most of my devices to my Elk using the manual tap-tap procedure. It mostly works, but I'd like to do it over again via PH, to clean up a few mistakes, and so that I can get my defined groups running on the M1G.

I understand that I need to transfer the device table and group data to the Elk M1XSP via a null modem serial cable. My question is: do I need to transfer anything to the 2414S serial PLC? If so, how do I do that? Do I temporarily connect it to my PC, or do I just set up its links remotely somehow, via Insteon Explorer?

Thanks in advance!

rshassell,

Welcome to PowerHome!

Sounds like you have a pretty good handle so far. Alot of people are running this same setup with a 2414s hooked to the Elk via M1XSP and a 2414u hooked to PowerHome for link creation.

If this is your setup, then the ideal way to proceed is to have the 2414u plugged into PowerHome and have PowerHome aware of the 2414s (in the Insteon devices table). Use PowerHome to create all of the links necessary between the individual Insteon devices and the 2414S. You do not need to create links between the devices and the 2414U unless you plan on controlling them from PowerHome as well as the Elk. Once all of your devices are programmed with links for the 2414S (and 2414U if desired), hook up the M1XSP. Use the null serial cable and the M1XSP tab in the Insteon Explorer to program the information into the M1XSP. When that is done, I would then hook up the 2414S to PowerHome and on the Setup tab, clear the PLC database and then "ADD ID's to PLC". This will insure everything is synced with one another.

Keep in mind that you DO NOT have to program either the M1XSP or the 2414S after the initial setup above UNLESS you add or remove Insteon device ID's. If you don't add or take away from your 67 devices (or swap any of them out), then you can use the 2414U connected to PowerHome to play with links to your hearts content and not have to reprogram the M1XSP or the 2414S. If you do add, delete, or change any Insteon devices, then repeat the above steps.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any problems or questions,

Dave.

Could you create the links etc in either the 2414U or the 2414S, and then copy them to the other PLC?

If things change, could you then update the 2414U, and recopy over to the 2414S?

More documentation on Elk and Powerhome would be very cool

Yes...Links can be copied from one PLC to the other. However, in order to do so, you MUST connect the PLC to the PowerHome machine. PowerHome cannot copy links to a PLC remotely.

There are some more features in PowerHome / Elk integration in the works as well updated documentation coming soon.

Does this include creating a group (link above 192/196/whatever)? When the Elk turns on a wall switch, the corresponding KPL non-load button doesn't come on. I was hoping to work around this by creating a new group of the switch and the KPL button, then having the Elk turn on & off the group to keep things visually synced.
