so lets say I want to use powerhome to run everything in my house and I have 3 rooms with tv and cable boxes. If I can only use one usb-uirt, how would I control everything? does everything need to be on the main powerhome box or could I have powerhome on one computer and another computer that is the media center installed with video equipment using a usb-uirt?
What happens to the other rooms, how do I control them if I can't use more than one usb-uirt?
finally, if I want to use Ipod touches or similar touchscreens and remote into powerhome with remote desktop, can I use like 3 of them, one for each room?

PowerHome can use multiple USB-UIRT's now (there used to be a single usb-uirt limitation). I presently use 2.
The tough part will be finding the pathway to get the IR signal from the UIRT's t0 your cablebox's. If you have another "media" computer already near the a remote cable box, you might want to consider sending it DCC commands (PowerHome Distributed Control Client), and have the UIRT connected to the media computer....just a quick thought.
It will really depends on where your hardware is located, and what cables or computers are nearby (to carry the IR signal to the cable box input).

so I could use like one usb-uirt in each room assume I have a computer in each of those rooms. and I assume powerhome is going to communicate with the remote computers in some fashion and do everything it could normally do, what about remoting in with a number of remotes, can it handle 3 or 4 remotes?

I currently send my IR from PH over RG6 to multiple units using 1 UIRT. Each device remotely has its own unique code. Currently I control the TV, SAT, and amplifier.

The USB-UIRT is attached to the computer in which PH is installed You teach it the codes you want to send. Then with a macro you can send codes to any device that recognizes them via any media that will transmit IR. In my case I use IR over Coax. The USB – UIRT sends the IR signal to the IR over COAX receiver that in turn transmits it to its IR receiver at the remote location. As long as I have a remote IR receiver I can receive anywhere the signal goes.

The USB-UIRT has an 1/8" plug that is capable of supporting multiple zones. Its been quite awhile since Ive worked on the UIRT code but I did take a look and confirm that PowerHome includes support for the UIRT's multiple zones (1 thru 3). However, as long as each device you wish to control uses different IR codes, then zones really arent that important. You could plug an 1/8" jack into the UIRT and then run the IR over RG-6, cat5, or virtually any pair of wires and then connect to a stick on IR emitter. This could also be a double IR emitter if you need to control two devices. If you need to control more than two devices, you could probably wire multiple emitters in either series or parallel but you could also invest in an IR distribution block (I belive SmartHome sells these from Xantech) and pump the IR from the UIRT to multiple devices in multiple places.
