Hi guys,
Quick question. I need to add some more insteon devices particularly Dual Band, as there are a couple spots in the house I can't control with x10 or the new insteon modules I have. So I'm think more dual band modules would help?? If i understand the technology correctly.. please correct me if I am wrong. I am currently needing a couple appliance modules. I was just looking at the 2456S3 applianceLinc Relay, but I'm not sure this will help with my communication problem. It refers to repeating messages but not dual band. I mean I need this thing anyway, but I'm trying to get full coverage ASAP. I'm open to thoughts.
Thanks,
Brian

If I’ve got this right Dual Band mean that it is relaying Insteon over power line plus transmitting as in Access Points. If that is true why not deploy an Access Point near you problem area if you have one and not worry about buying a new module. Caveat, X10 does NOT apply. There is no retransmission of X10 signals period

I have just *started* getting the dual-band modules (still need to install a few). No report yet on how successful they are in those tricky areas, but will let the group know once they are in place.
I also started acquiring the "FilterLinc" devices...not really sure what I want to do with them yet, but I have them to work with.

Plug them in front of any signal sucking devices like computers of any type and mainly power strips.

Well, I could by a access point. But, I was under the understanding that the more insteon modules were in place, the more reliable the over all network gets. That's why I was focusing on modules in the bad areas.
On a plus side, the Insteon controller can now control a x10 light switch for the outside lights fine, something the x10 controller hasn't done in years. And the controller is in the same plug!
So, plugging a access point into the bad area of the house will allow signals to get there. Well, I can give it a shot I supposed.

Brian,
You are right in that the Insteon modules repeat the Insteon signal. They do not repeat the X10 signal. The problem occurs when there is noise on the power line and the Insteon signal can’t get through and then you lose their repeat process. That is where the Access Point comes in to play. It basically bypasses the problem area. Example would be bridging across the 2 phases. I have a situation where the noise is so bad that only X10 can penetrate it. So I have an Access Point on the other side to bridge the problem area. Dual Band is basically the same thing as having Access Point. Like you connection to your router can be both wireless and Cat 5 at the same time.

Ok gotchya.
I've ordered an Access point, and a appliance module. We'll see what happens. I can't believe how fast Insteon responds compared to x10! I'd like to replace all my X10 eventually, but if I can get both working reliably I won't rush.
You know, I'm glad this forum is so helpful, because I am an IT guy, I am in charge of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of computer equiptment in 6 locations spread out in both Canada and the US, and for some reason this Insteon stuff and the way they write their information about it leaves me confused and I'm just not 100% of what I need sometimes. Guess it's just one of those mind things.
But good old PH people shine on through.
I'll post back with the results once I get this stuff in place.
Thanks for the help,
Brian

I replaced all of my X-10 infrastructure with Insteon and haven't regretted it; however, I *do* still have some "black holes" in my network that seem to mess with the signals. I have been replacing some of my regular Insteon devices with 2-way devices, and ordered the FilterLinc to try to figure out where the bigger ones might be and deal with them.
On a side note, I have an Insteon thermostat that I have NEVER been able to get to work with PowerHome; however, it works fine with the RemoteLinc (which is for all practical purposes nearly useless). I've tried to troubleshoot it multiple times. It just will not register on PowerHome - I've tried to link it with PH in "listening" mode (nothing)...I've even tried to manually type it in. I think I got a message from it *once*. I would LOVE to take control of the HVAC with PH, but alas have had no luck so far. Oh well, it's all in good fun.
