I just finshed up a really quick addition to my system.

I recently bought a bunch of DS10A wireless door/window sensors from X10.com, and finally put one of them to use. With the washer control dial in the "load finished" position, I mounted the magnet to the dial, and put the switch on the panel, leaving room for the magnet to rotate past. I know know when a load is started and when it finshes by code added to announce this over the whole-house audio system!

I think I'll even have it send my cell phone a text message when I'm mowing the lawn!

I like the DS10A because you can also put a relay instead of the magnetic switch... Your idea is awsome... my washer is computer-controlled so your idea wouldn't work here But since there are status-leds I can attach an sm10 to it...

Cheers!

That's a pretty slick idea Tony . I guess Im in the same situation as Peter though with the darn washer all electronic. I feel like I should already know this (my brain is turning to mush with all this house buying and selling going on), but what is an SM10?

Dave,

I am assuming the SM10 is the Universal X-10 sender. by connecting up a light sensor to the input then you could get status from LED's.
