Hello all,
read the following: (copy&paste from PH-main)
PowerHome Uptime: 30 days 1 hours 5 minutes 34 seconds
Windows Uptime: 29 days 23 hours 34 minutes 25 seconds
question: How can the PH-uptime be more than the Windows-Uptime?

Don't be silly. It's got to be because Dave writes better code than Microsoft...

That is a different point of view... makes you think doesn't it..... But the question still remains... how?

Seems to me that indicates a glitch in the database. We are all running the beta version, right?

Perhaps we (read: Dave) should move this thread to bug reports... Could it have something to do with the fact that I am running my own timeserver on my network and PH runs a macro every 30mins so that the time is synch-ed with my timeserver?

Buzzzzzzzzzzz!! All wrong (except for the response about better code than Microsoft) .
The Windows uptime comes from the GetTickCount API which counts the number of milliseconds elapsed since Windows was started. This value rolls over approx. every 49.7 days.
The PowerHome uptime stores a datetime in a variable when PowerHome is launched. This is just subtracted from the current datetime so the PowerHome uptime should always be accurate (unless the current date/time is manually changed).
Windows does not provide a good consistent way to tell the uptime. I believe some newer versions make a registry entry but nothing is consistent across all versions of Windows that PowerHome supports.
Dave.

Nope, no offense at all . I got a little chuckle as I was reading the thread because I remembered as I was writing the Status screens and including the Windows Uptime portion I thought about the rollover and then told myself, "Nahhh...nobody will know because Windows will never stay up that long ".

That's another fairytale shot to hell....Now 3 days later since this topic started, the time-difference is now about 2 hours on 33 days. It should be a compliment for you however.....

Are you saying that PowerHome uptime is now 33 days (should be right) and that Windows uptime is now only showing 2 hours? If that's the case, my info regarding the gettickcount API is wrong .
BTW, what version of Windows are you running?
Dave.

You failed to read the entire sentence:

Whoa !!
That is pretty good for Windows 98. Most people dont get that kind of mileage but I can distinctly remember running PowerHome for about 6 months straight without a reboot once on Windows 98.
Maybe you could elaborate a little on the selfmade flash drive?

it is a simple double sided PCB with a box-header connected to the IDE-port and with a header for Compact Flash-cards on it. A few condensators and a switch to choose between master and slave and that is it.... it was an idea of a dutch elektronics-magazine.... since pin-measurements where about 0.5 mm it toook a lot of guts to solder the smallest part of the PCB, the header for the CF-Card.... An uncle of mine is a has repair company and he let me use his magnifying lamp otherwise I was unable to solder it... As soon as I have to open the HA-Server I will make a few photos of it... OK?
Only thing is:
it only works on newer PII and up since the IDE has to be enhanced IDE / ATA.... I use it as a network-drive when I work on PH to store files needed... also the backup of the database I make everynight at 11 is placed on this drive...

Heh, heh. I'll put in special code just for your reg number so that Windows uptime will always be just a few seconds longer than PowerHome (just kidding).
Seriously though, I'll do some research and see if I cant determine some different ways to measure Windows uptime and then just have a setting in the INI file that tells PowerHome which method to use. That way, users could have a choice based upon their operating system, etc.
PS...it bothers me to .
Dave.

Ive actually come across some new code that allows you to measure uptime using the performance counter. This returns a 64 bit number in seconds rather than a 32 bit number in milliseconds. I havent done the math myself but someone else said that you wont get a rollover for over a billion years. That should do the trick .
Im just hoping Windows 98 supports the performance counter.
Also, very sorry to hear about your crash. It looks as if you didnt knock on wood after posting here though . In any event, I hope all is well with your system now.
Dave.
