Well I got PH up and running this weekend.
I added 15 devices and let PH do the discover thing.
It worked just like it said it would. I also created some link with PH.
I have two devices (swicthlincs)that PH will not discover. They are on the same circuit as other switches are on and where found. One is in the same box and is tied to the same power. I moved my laptop and PLC to different locations ( in the same room) thinking it my be a communication problem. Still no go.
Being new to PH, I don't know if this is a normal thing.
Should I manually enter these devices?
If so can I still link in PH
Thanks Ron

I installed an Insteon KeypadLinc (2486D) this weekend, PowerHome would not auto discover, so I entered it manually. I created some links between the KeypadLinc and the PLC in PowerHome. The links didn't work until I did a rebuild (I think it was rebuild, I right-clicked on KeyPadLinc on the Links by Controller screen). I also seem to be having a bunch of reliability problems with Insteon (NOT a PowerHome issue/problem). The SDM locks up, etc. like a bunch of people have mentioned. Insteon control seems to be flakey at best.
One thing I did notice when I read through the KeypadLinc docs on the SmartHome web site (was not mentioned in the couple page "manual" that came with the KeypadLinc), they mention that their X10 devices with BoosterLinc (and apparently the standalone BoosterLinc plug-in modules) can cause problems with Insteon. Basically they recommended if you have BoosterLinc enabled (like ToggleLinc with BoosterLinc) to turn it off. They then mention you can install NEWER Insteon BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters. Read here, page 33:

Ron,
Glad to see the discovery is mostly working. It sounds as if it the problems may be communications related.
It's no problem to manually enter the devices. Just be sure that once you enter the devices, do a "Save" (press F5) and then go into the "Insteon DM Control" screen and do a "Clear PLC Database" followed by a "Add ID's to PLC". This is done automatically during an autodiscovery but must be performed manually when adding devices manually. If you have a lot of devices to add manually, you only need to do the Clear/Add once at the end.
Afterwards, you can still use PowerHome to create/edit links as long as the communication issues arent too bad (peek/poke and other direct commands are retried a number of times unlike the "enrollment" commands issued during an autodiscovery).
Dean is also correct...the Insteon network is very susceptable to other X10 devices as well as powerstrip "filters" and things like computer power supplies.
Let me know,
Dave.

Does this mean all those 5, 10 and 15 Amp noise filters I installed to help my X10 network work properly are actually hurting me with Insteon?

Thanks Dean and Dave,
Dean I had another job that had amp filters. My smarthome Rep said the ones that had the white cases are bad. The ones in the gray cases are ok. Or maybe its the other way around. Anyway he took back all the bad ones and traded for good ones.
This job is all insteon so I souldn't have a problem
with boostlinc.
After giving up on the discover thing, I shut down PH
and did the Tap Tap Linc just to get it up and running. That was Sunday afternoon late.
Today I manually entered the devices. I guess PH went out and uploaded the links? When I went to view the other links I had created in PH, the tap tap links where there to.
What are you (Dean and Dave)useing for a signal strength
meter for insteon? is there one? That is one thing I like about X10, at leased I can see what my signal is know what needs to be done.
Thanks Ron

Ron, I am not aware of any Insteon signal tester/meter. I always thought about getting the ELK test meter for X10, but never actually got it.

Ron,
I don't have anything for signal strength either (Im not sure if any really exist). I usually just view the details of my SDM log to see if Im getting any missed commands and such.
Yes...PowerHome will automatically discover all tap-tap links once it's aware of the individual devices .
Dave.
