Yes but have not fully tested it yet. Virtual serial port plugin not working. Had to reset USB PLM and reload Core and Add Min. Seems to work but I'm far from finishing testing.

10 days without power and without PH, but everything is
now up and running and I had a chance to load Windows 8
Pro.

First, as to installing Windows 8. I loaded it over
Windows 7 Professional on a machine loaded with boards
and software that runs 24/7 and is about 2 years old.
After 3 installation failures I found from searching the
web that it is best to disable all services and remove
everything from the startup folder. After I did that the
installation was successful.

The first thing I did was open up PH2. It opened quickly
but initially couldn't find the database. I closed it
and opened it again. It found the database and opened
quickly.

However, it did not find my PLM and thus nothing was
working. I quickly realized that the Windows
installation changed the numbers of the serial ports on
one of my cards. Through PH (setup>controllers) I set
the PLM to the correct port and all the insteon devices
worked. Even better they worked noticeably quicker than
previously. I'm postulating that this is due to my
disabling many services.

The only things that didn't work was the USBUIRT and
RS232. All that the USBUIRT required was an updated
driver available at their site.

I use the RS232 port to control my Denon receiver.
Unfortunately after a couple of hours of tinkering I
couldn't get this to work. I assume it's a windows 8
issue and not a PH issue but I'm not sure. Instead, I
spent my time getting the generic plugin to work over my
Lan with the Receiver. This works extremely well and is
actually a better solution than RS232. This is working
one way at this time (PH to the Receiver). I have yet to
try Dave's trigger solution mentioned in another thread
for the Receiver to PH piece.

All in all I am extremely happy with the way PH works
with Windows 8, especially the increase in both loading
speed of PH and also communications with my insteon
devices.

As to Windows 8 itself, the jury is out. I haven't seen
any 'must haves' for me and my browsers seem slower
accessing the web. I find myself using the 'classic'
mode and not really using the tiles. But it's only been
a couple of days since the install, so I reserve
judgment.

Dave, it seems any plugin that has to do with COM ports is failing with Windows 8. Any thoughts??? I believe they changed their approach on COM ports.

Pete,
My CID plugin is working as are several others. Did you
check to see if the com port numbers changed from your
previous installation? My com ports were renumbered.

Yep I sure did (PHCID). I even changed them on the system but still won't fire. It does load correctly. Just won't fire. Same thing with the VSP. I wonder what is different from yours. I'm running Classic Shell but I can't see where that would have anything to do with it. Hypertrm works and cid works using it. I did have to buy a new modem USR 5657 for Win8.

Here is a copy of the CID plugin info from PH in Windows 8
just in case yours is different.

PowerHome CID Plugin
PowerHome Plugin ID: CID
Plugin Version: 2.0
SDK Version: 1.2
Current Status: Enabled.

Just a shot in the dark. Did you change the PHCID.ini file
in the powerhome directory to reflect the possibly
different AT commands for your new modem?

I think there may be a problem with the number of rings. If I recall we have to receive 2 rings before the cid info. If so don't know why I have one unless my VOIP provider changed their stuff at the same time Win 8 came out.
My CID plugin points to the PH install and the PHCID has the correct port number. The trigger has not been change since it last work. The Help Plugins show all is good but the Hypertrm shows:

AT#CID=1
OK

RING

DATE=1127
TIME=0724
NMBR=850712xxxx
NAME=WIRELESS CALLER

Well I gave up for now, too busy with the Christmas season. Got it working using CallClerk driving globals. Seems to be a lot more reliable.

Noel, you're always a great help. I really appreciate the suggestions. When all other programs I've tried work it makes you wonder the sensitivity of the trigger. It may be something as simple as something I've done to the trigger. I know in the past Dave has had problems with some telco formats but I don't believe this one has changed. I tried it on 3 different Win 8s that work on Win 7 and all failed. The common dominator is the USR replacement but that checks out against all other test programs. "I'll be back"

Well, my old modem crapped out and I got a USRobotics 5637.
It works with hyperterminal and with it's own phone tools
program. It gives the caller id just like you indicate.
And although the plugin shows enabled in PH I can't get the
trigger to fire. The manual for the modem shows AT#CID=1
is the correct string to get the Caller ID enabled. I've
gone through all the variations in phcid.ini as well but no
luck.

So like you, I'm at a loss.

Dave, any suggestions for Pete and I?

I believe the problem is with the com port. The VSP has the same symptoms. It connects then disconnects and the link is not established. I use CallClerk which sets a global in turn fires the caller id program. Dave, look into the connection sequence with Win 8. Something is different I do believe..

Noel, interesting… I checked the modem and it is the same as yours. I don’t know if it is specific to that modem or not. Works great otherwise.

I downloaded the trial version of Call Clerk. It does work
well and has many options. But I would prefer using PH and
not spending the $40 on Call Clerk (unless I have to).
Maybe within the 30 days trial period we'll get it working.

I am a registered callclerk user....do you have it running on the same computer as ph? I run callclerk on a 2nd server...for some reason i can't get ph to receive msgs sent through the socket server. All the time i get a password error....

I run CallClerk on a system with PH running whose sole function is interaction between 2 PHs. My main system controls all the automation. The other PH handles CID and multimedia functions. The 2 talk to each other through socket server.

I call this pgm:
C:\Program Files (x86)\PHWMCMD\phwmcmd.exe

With these arguments:
ph_setglobal_a("CID_CALL_CLERK_NAME", "%Caller ID Name% ") + ph_setglobal_a("CID_CALL_CLERK_AREA", "%Caller ID Number% ") + PH_MACRO("TTS_AUTO_CID")

and that PH sends info to the other via socket server.

my setup is equals yours except for running multiple PH's
Strange enough the system running XP sends a socketpacket OK to the system running PH but when I send a socketpacket from win7, then the password fails.

I don’t have a password problem within PH on any of the systems using Socket Server but if I write a file to a system that has just been booted I have to enter passwords to access. For example I share Quicken data between 2 systems and gate it with PH. To write the DB back to the other system I sometimes have to use this approach.

ph_run("explorer /e,/root,q:")
ph_switchto("Windows Security",1) + ph_sendkeys("Joyce") +ph_sendkeys("{tab}")+ ph_sendkeys("xxxxx") +ph_sendkeys("{enter}")
ph_closewindow(ph_getvar_n(2,1))

I have 2 Win 8 and 1 Win 7 that have PH installed and communicating with each other.
