Junkie,
To accomplish the relatively simple voice control you're looking for, just open the PowerHome Explorer and navigate to the VOICE section. Right-click and create a new grammar. In my example, I'll call it "SIMPLE". Leave everything other than the ID at their default values.
Click on the details button (to far left of the line) to enter the grammar details. For the "Command" field, just use a short ID describing the voice command. In the Syntax field, type the actual text you would like to recognize on. You don't want to make this too short (like "Night") as you'll get a lot of false recognitions. I would suggest something more like "Good Night, Im going to bed". Select an action type of Macro and then choose your macro.
Create another grammar detail line just like above for the "Im up" part.
Navigate to Setup->VR and be sure that Voice Recognition is enabled. Set the Auto Grammar to the "SIMPLE" grammar you just created. Any changes made here require a restart or reinit.
After voice recognition is running, go to the Voice menu and do some Recognition training. If you dont do any traning, you'll get VERY poor results. You should also probably tune the recognition settings for your particular microphone and such.
Keep in mind that all of the VR is handled via Microsoft's SAPI control and I don't have any way to improve reliability, etc. With the proper hardware (high quality microphones, mixers, and such) and reasonably limited grammars, you can make VR work fairly well. In real world practical applications though, it's primarily a novelty.
Dave.

Junkie,
Are you using USB microphones or standard ones plugged into your soundcard. It has been reported that USB mic's don't work properly with the Microsoft SAPI.

Junkie,
Ok, got VR installed and started testing. It sounds as if you've gone ahead and enabled voice recognition in the Setup section of the Explorer and done a reinit. It also sounds as if you're launching "Microphone Setup" under the Voice menu. This is good. As you navigate through this window, you should end up at a window titled "Make sure the microphone is working". Here you should be able to speak into the microphone and watch the volume control auto adjust as you speak and as well as see the horizontal progress bar reflect your voice output. Is this where you're currently stuck? If so, are you not seeing any response to your voice as you speak? If this is the case, then the Microsoft SAPI is not looking in the proper spot for your microphone even if you hear your voice coming out of the speakers (this is actually a bad thing).
If this is the screen you're stuck at, be sure and press the "Volume" button. It will open up your volume control as well as a help file for getting the microphone setup. Follow the instructions in the help. They are fairly explicit.
Let me know if this is where you're stuck or if it's somewhere else.
Dave.

Junkie,
Check my post again. If you hear your voice coming out of the speaker, that's bad and something is not configured properly in your mixer settings. Be sure and press the "Volume" button and follow all of the suggestions in the Help window that opens.
Let me know,
Dave.

It seems to me you've got the recordingsettings mixed up:
Are you sure you've got the settings correct regarding recording? Try to record your voice with soundrecorder and see if this works, you should hear your voice when playing back the soundfile you've just recorded. Be sure to select the microphone in the recording settings.
just some thoughts...
Peter

Junkie,
Ok...if you were able to successfully train, you are nearly there. The fact that you're getting question marks in the VR box means that VR is now at least properly setup and able to hear commands from your microphone. The question marks however signify that the command is not recognized.
What is the text in the button next to the VR recognition box. The default will be "POWERHOME - SLEEP". The POWERHOME is the default user. You can change the user and perform training on a per user basis. If you've gone with the default thus far, then POWERHOME is fine and you would have done your training with this user. The part after the dash is the critical part. This is the grammar that is currently in use. If the default is set to SLEEP, then the only recognized command will be "Voice wake up". Try this command at the same distance and voice level that you used when training.
If the command is recognized, you now know that VR is working. At this point, you can create the grammar that you want to use and set it as the default grammar in the VR setup section of the Explorer.
If you're still having problems with recognition, then open the "Recognition Setup" window under the Voice menu. Try changing the Rejection vs Recognition slider down to the left towards fewer false rejections. If your machine is fast enough, I would also move the Accuracy vs Recognition response time all the way to the right.
Dave.

Junkie,
To recognize multiple commands, just create extra lines in the Voice Grammar Details screen ("GOOD NIGHT" grammar).
If you got it to recognize a few times, then you should be working. The trick now is to play with the "Recognition Setup" window settings.
There won't be much more you can try. I can tell you that the quality of the sound card plays a large part in recognition and a lot of times onboard sound on the motherboard is usually a lower quality. Also, cheap soundcards don't usually seem to perform as well. From my reading (and personal experience), SoundBlaster cards seem to give fairly consistent results. The only other option are better microphones. One that Ive gotten pretty good results with is a "Voice Tracker" from Acoustic Magic. It's not cheap however and will run about $130.00.
You might try more training as well.
Dave.
