Peter,
Ive got a K8000 that I use for development but havent implemented in actual use yet (still working on my closet). You may want to get in touch with Didi. He is in the UK and the user that pushed and prodded for K8000 support within PowerHome . I know he was using 3 of them tied together and had hardwired switches for sensing button presses or combinations of button presses on the digital inputs to control various actions. I also know he used the analog outputs to control dimmable lighting.
Basically with a K8000, you would get analog inputs (useful for temperature/humidity sensing) and analog outputs (dimmable lighting/motors), digital inputs (monitor magnetic contacts, motion sensors, level switches, any dry contact closure) and digital outputs (turn on sprinklers, alarms, lights, pumps, etc) all in a hardwired package.
I know Didi used to have a website in his profile (doesnt appear to be working right now) that showed pictures and had details on his automation setup.
HTH,
Dave.
