Tony,

Looking at the code, two things come to mind...

1. The port you're using for the DCC is already open and in use by another process.

2. The Microsoft Winsock Control is not installed or registered properly.

Dave.

OK. This error seems to have started after applying several Win 2k updates.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled DCC with no change.

I'll see if the port is being used by something else on that machine.

How could I check the Winsock install?

Netstat shows my chosen port as not in use.

have you checked your IP-settings yet? Go to your TCP/IP settings in the configurationscreen, and then choose TCP/IP filtering... Choose accept all (or something of that kind) In W2000 you can close or open ports in the TCP/IP settings....

2nd: If you have IILS installed, then some ports are standard in use.... You may also want to check this.

3rd: Check if you have the proper winsock version

Hopefully this'll help you

IP settings... Check!

No IIS.

How do I check for the "proper" winsock version?

Locate winsock.dll in the winnt/system AND winsock.dll in the winnt/system32 directory...The fileversion should be 3.0 or above and the wdm-version should be 4.0 or above

You could also check if your antivirus-software doesn't reroute certain ports... especially AVAST has the wish to reroute certain ports in order to scan everything that comes in... If I use Avast I can't use a TLS1-connection (TLS1 is a newer verion of SSL but doesn't require dedicated ports...SSL on SMTP uses port 587, TLS1 uses the regaular port 25) to my mailserver (which is on the same network, it is just in another room), If I shut down POP-Scanning in Avast, TLS is available....This is done by rerouting port 110 to 576 in the antivirus-software... when scanning is done, port 576 is rerouted back to 110.
Which software you use I don't know but it'll take some seaching in order for you to find it and only 2000 or XP supports rerouting of ports 95/98/Me do not support this

The winsock versions are correct, but there is not one in the system folder (only system32). My XP box is the same.

Do you think I need to uninstall and reinstall tcp/ip?

No, there is probably no need to reinstall, I think a copy will be sufficient... Just copy winsock.dll to the system folder... Have you checked your antivirus software yet?

My antivirus does not do TCP/IP.

I'll try copying that over tonight.

The only thing left to do is reinstall winsock control...

But I would recheck the antivirus first, what happens when you close the antvirus and remove all drivers out of pc's memory. The best you can do this is after a boot-up

I got it. I ran SFC, and it works now. I was researching another problem, and the solution fixed both.

Thanks for your suggestions, though!

Dave,

The SFC is a Win 2k/XP utility that compares "important" files (i.e. dll's) on your system against the install CD and copies them over if they are different.

Unfortunately, there is no log generated, so I don't know what exactly fixed it.
