I hope someone has accomplished the task I'm about to embark on. I wish to set up PH to play a wave file which will alert my dogs that it's time to go outside. Then, PH should open the patio door to let them out.

I've been reading up on the doormate hardware which will allow the sliding door to be automated. However, there set up is self contained and doesn't need an automation controller. I can probably hack one of the keyfobs to give PH control over that type of a set up...but perhaps there is another way.

Anyway got ideas on hardware I could use for this?

I just Googled this. Pretty cool, but it looks like the manufacturer ceased to exist almost a year ago.

If you find one, you could likely pop it open and just use an X10 Universal module (or other equivalent technology) to open/close it.

If you are already using Insteon devices, Simplehomenet makes various devices that can monitor the state of the door using magnetic switches and control circuitry to open and close the door using relays. I monitor my garage door positions (full open/fully closed) with magnetic switches connected to an EZIO2X4, as well as open/close the doors using the Output relays. My Wayne Dalton door controls are all wireless so I had to hack into the wireless remotes and parallel the open/close push buttons with the EZIO2X4 relays. The garage is detached and I cannot see the doors from the house. Using a Smarthome Keypadlinc, I can see if the doors are fully closed, fully open, as well as open/close each door from the same Keypadlinc. The output relays can be assigned X10 addresses and controlled that way but I don't trust X10 enough to manage the opening and closing of doors. If you are not already on Insteon, probably too expensive to get into just for that one purpose. I already had Insteon throughout the house when I decided to use Simplehomenet devices to monitor and control the garage. They have proven to be reliable devices for my application.
